Garden Club!

The Garden, after the second Garden Club meeting during winter!

Emily, our garden coordinator, (but you probably already knew that!) and Mrs. Arigi have been holding the Garden Club. The Garden Club meets every Wednesday during lunch. If you haven't already, you should stop by! We plant, harvest, or you can just come to hang out and eat. Hope to see you there!

Our Orchard and Spring Volunteer Workday

Peyton and I making garden houses

morning weeding and mulching
The garden is all good! Last week we had another volunteer workday and we got a lot done. We took out some over-grown plants and put new ones, and moved ALL the mulch to the sides. My dad worked on perfecting the irrigation so we didn’t have to lug the hose around everywhere. (Finally!) But it wasn’t up that day so we had to water the garden the old fashiond way. The good news is, is that all the rain made the plants grown huge and it was very sunny when we were working. On the down side, I forgot sunscreen.

Our First Planting Day!

Planting begins in our talk circle

On November 15 we had our first planting day! It was really fun and exiting. The seventh grade classes were chosen to be the first students to plant in the garden. We started out by spliting the class up and walking out to the garden. We stood in a semi-cirlce in the central gathering spot and Katie, our garden coordinator, explained what we had to do. My class began the seed plantings in the woolly pockets which is our vertical garden.

Other classes did the plantings in the raised beds. We would either get seeds or starter plants and dig our holes big enough to fit them. For the seeds in the woolly pockets we used our finger to create the hole and we then covered them up with nice compost and put a popsicle stick to label each type of seed that was planted. We had many different types of seeds such as little gem lettece, carrots, and other herbs. We only had about half our science pieriod to do it, but it was really fun to plant. Our garden is looking more like an Edible Garden everyday!

9.26.10 Our Greenhouse takes shape & Woolly Pockets get compost

filling the woolly's
When the day started we filled planting soil into the Woolly Pockets. We poured soil in all fifty pockets and they look kind of fat!. But fat’s good…. at least for plants.

Go Giants!
The greenhouse started off in a box. Not even as a box, just in one. After some hard work of reading the instructions my dad and his helpers finally started building our greenhouse.

Garden in Progress

our garden sign
The weekend of August 28 and 29 more volunteers came to help build the garden. One day was windy and one day was hot but we still got a lot done. The deer fence was finished, the long retaining wall planters were built, the gates were started, we leveled the dirt and backfilled, we prime painted the shed/kitchen and we started putting up the woolly pockets. Whew! Thank you to everyone who came to help out.

Woolly Pockets

Woolly Pockets are one of the first steps in growing our garden. Woollys are a series of hanging "pockets" that hold soil, compost and plants. They are made from recycled plastic bottles. As a woolly school garden we raised enough dollars to receive 50 pockets that will be used to grow our first planted harvest. The pockets will be "hung" onto our woolly pocket wall next to our kitchen area as an edible vertical garden or living wall. We will be able to say " Let's eat the wall!"
